Description:
Snuff-bottle with a flattened oval body, short tubular neck and oval base with ringed foot. Made of clear semi-opaque glass overlaid with red. Decorated with a crab on each side holding millet. Crabs and millet are a Chinese pun (“hexie”) referring to harmony. Stopper made of green and coral glass, spoon made of tortoise shell.

Comments:This type of clear glass with small bubbles was once called ‘snowflake glass’ by connoisseurs. Zhang Rong (Palace Museum, Beijing, 17-07-2012) dates this snuff-bottle to the 18th century, and regards it possible to have been made at the Imperial Workshop (Zaobanchu).
