Comments:Cathy Wang’s daughter was born at the end of 2005, at which time Wang’s parents bought these boots over from China for their grandchild. The boots were made in Mengzhou City, Henan Province. The boots are large because they are designed to be worn over padded trousers. The donor’s mother told her that she too had worn boots like these when she was three years old. The green colour is thought suitable for a girl, and the tiger faces threaten away ghosts or negative spirits (bixie). They also demonstrate the continuing importance of auspicious and protective design in post-socialist China. (A Komlosy, Apr 2010)
