Description:
Shadow puppet body, made from donkey hide, with joints fastened by string, with stained, incised and painted detail. Three metal and bamboo rods attached to arms and neck for movement. Costume is black, almost solid, with yellow platform soled shoes, green sash from waist piece topped with two small red circles.

Comments:Typed note found in storage with puppets contains the following details: – collection dates to the 1950s- puppets would have been used by the puppeteer as he toured around villages to perform popular plays- collection also contains a large number of older puppets serving as the master set and dating from the end of the 19th century.- shadow plays are still performed today, but collections such as these are often broken up and sold individually.- the collection is representative of what puppeteers has at their disposal for performances – various props, animals, bodies and over 300 heads to provide the flexibility to perform characters from a range of religious and folk stories, myths and historical events.- made from donkey hide, tanned, stained and decorated with intricate cut out designs.- the puppeteer manipulates the puppets on one side of a cloth screen and the details of each puppet are projected onto the other side.
