Description:
This shallow porcelain saucer dish is decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels in doucai style. Inside, within a medallion, are a pair of mandarin ducks swimming in a lotus pond with water weeds. Outside it is painted with alternating male and female mandarin ducks among lotus and water weed plants. The decoration is extremely stiff and the iron red particularly vivid suggesting a date in the later Qing for manufacture. The base bears a four character kaishu mark in underglaze blue which reads 愛蓮珍貴ai lian zhen gui [cherish the lotus as a precious treasure] a pun on [continual love is truly precious].
