Description:
Saucer. Coat of arms of Butler, as borne by the Earls of Ormonde. “Or a chief indented gules; crest, In a ducal coronet or a plume of five ostrich feathers argent, thereon a falcon rising of the last”. In 1661 the 12th Earl of Ormonde (title created 1328) was advanced to the Dukedom or Ormonde. The 2nd Duke supported the House of Orange, attended King William at the Battle of Boyne, and was Captain General of the Forces in England to Queen Anne, but was impeached after the accession of George 1 and died in exile in Avignon. He kept his Irish titles. The 14th and 15th Earls never assumed their titles, nor did Walter, de jure 16th Earl, for whom this service was possibly made. He was born in 1703; his only son John succeeded in 1783 and was recognised by the Irish House of Peers, dying in 1795. Made of enamelled porcelain.
