Period:Ming dynasty Production date:1600-1644 (circa)
Materials:earthenware
Technique:glazed, moulded,
Subjects:bird
Dimensions:Height: 22 centimetres Length: 25 centimetres
Description:
Earthenware architectural finial in the form of a bird with aubergine, turquoise and pale yellow glazes. This architectural finial is in the form of a stiffly modelled bird with a prominent beak, beady eyes and short wings folded over the top of its long tail, its flexed talons gripping a rocky base. Most of the bird’s feathers, legs and claws are covered with a dark aubergine glaze but its breast and under-feathers show traces of a straw-yellow glaze now degraded. Turquoise details are added to the rocks, eyes and beak. It is crudely made and the body, revealed in areas where the glaze has chipped off, is gritty and pinkish beige.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Roof tiles in the form of animals were fired in one piece for the ridge. The present piece is pierced with a hollow opening inside the rock, suggesting that this was made as an architectural finial for fitting over a roof peg.
