Comments:This remarkable creature is unlike previous dragons in that it has a very large, vertical bottle horn. Its general shape and the fine thread relief on its body also rather different. None the less, its oval body carved in three dimensions closely resembles that of the Hongshan dragons and the oval dragon in Fu Hao’s tomb. Indeed the creature appears as almost a solid block, with its coiled form suggested only by a circular hole, cut through the block, that is small in relation to the body. The bottle horn is supported by a large head that touches a small curved tail. Details of the head and body are indicated in thread relief lines that form meanders, scrolls and chevrons on the two sides. Incises lozenges run the length of the back to the tail which is decorated with double curved stripes. See Rawson 1995, p.210, cat.no.12.3. The thick dragon carved in line relief with coiled tail meeting its open mouth. The head has well defined eyes and protruding bottlehorns, with incised lozenges running the length of the back to the tail. The sides of the body decorated with scrolls and chevrons. A large central perforation rungs through the coiled body. Shang. Length 47mm.
