Description:
Earthenware ridge tile in the form of Han Xiangzi with ‘sancai’ glaze. This weather-worn ridge tile is modelled in the form of Han Xiangzi, one of the Eight Daoist Immortals, playing his attribute, the flute. He is standing on the flat top of a short ridge tile, dressed in a long flowing robe, secured at the waist with a sash, a hat and shoes. The figure is covered with green, cream, yellow and black glaze reminiscent of the ‘sancai’ palette.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:It is possible that this ridge tile once belonged to a temple with a series of the Eight Daoist Immortals and the God of Longevity, Shoulao. Han Xiangzi’s character is based on a historical figure of the Tang dynasty said to be the nephew of Han Yu (768-824). He is the popular god associated with musicians, but he is also renowned for his magical skills and his understanding of alchemic principles. The first roof tiles with figures attached appear in the Yuan dynasty (1280-1368) in a turquoise palette first introduced to stoneware. However, the Ming dynasty may be regarded as the golden age of such tile production.
