Comments:The retort is from the old horse trough type furnace where the retorts actually sat in the fire. Collected from a derelict smelter at the village of Yangquegou, just west of Changchunpu, about 10 km west of Bijie in north-west Guizhou province. The retorts used now are very similar, just a little larger with a collar just below the rim. (C. Michaelson, 1996)See Xu Li, ‘Traditional zinc-smelting technology in the Guma district of Hezhang County’, in P.T. Craddock, ed., ‘2000 Years of Zinc and Brass’, BM Occasional Paper, no. 50 (1990).For background to acquisition, see Andrew Burnett & John Reeve, ‘Behind the Scenes at the British Museum’ (2001), pp. 58-9.
