Comments:This copper plate was engraved in China. It is one of six plates commemorating the Annam Campaign. A print take from the plate is also in the British Museum collection (1989,0628.1.b) Although printing from copperplate was known in China before, Chinese engravers lacked experience in the European technique. Unlike woodcuts, where the image to be printed stands in relief, prints from engraved plates are taken from the lines cut into the metal plate. The plate is covered with an oil-based ink and the surface then wiped clean so that ink is left only in the engraved lines. The plate is then printed by first covering it with dampened printing paper and then passing both between the rollers of an intaglio press which forces the paper into the engraved lines thereby transferring the ink from the lines to the paper. Woodblocks and copper plates are both cut in reverse.
