Comments:This and two other prints (1993,1108,0.1 and 1993,1108,0.2.) form a series and show Tibetan rural life, partly based on Zhao’s experiences there in the 1950s. In this print, peasants dance happily in the fields, while a procession carries a poster of Chairman Mao. Tibetan traditions, costumes and life styles are reflected in the images. Like most of Zhao’s work at this time, the series carried political significance, having been made shortly after a failed uprising in Tibet. It also featured agricultural abundance, an important Communist propaganda theme. The prints in the series are of exceptionally high quality, made with several woodblocks, using both water-soluble colour and oil-based inks.
