Comments:The heroine of the opera The Red-Maned Steed is Wang Baochuan, or ‘Precious Stream’. Against the wishes of her father she marries an impoverished gardener, Xue Pingui. Family members plot to have Xue sent to the Western Regions, where he meets and weds a princess. They live together for 18 years. Eventually receiving a message (through the aid of a helpful bird) from Precious Stream, Xue contacts her and they are reunited. The inscription on the print summarises the plot. In this print, the designer placed the opera characters in a landscape setting. In 1935 the Chinese writer and director Shih-I Hsiung prepared an English-language version of the opera with the title Lady Precious Stream. It was performed in London and elsewhere to great acclaim.
