Comments:The warrior in this print has a large, protruding nose and bulging eyes, suggesting he is of non-Chinese origin. He holds a small dish on which is the image of a deer. The character for ‘deer’ (lu) has the same sound as that for ‘emolument’, conveying auspicious wishes for an official salary. In popular print tradition, the function of military figures is usually to protect the house. It is unusual that here he is holding an auspicious image, which is usually the role of a civilian figure. The soft blue and rose colour scheme is characteristic of Suzhou prints believed to date from the Kangxi era. The print is one of a pair (see 1964,0411,0.13) depicting flamboyantly dressed military men, and is notable for the precision of its intricate designs.Published: Bo 1995, fig.47; Bo 1998, fig.25
