Description:
Plate XVII: religious ceremony in honour of agriculture performed by the Chinese Emperor, seen in the centre of a field, on hand on the plough pulled by a bullock, the other holding a whip, before sowing seeds kept in a golden casket held by one of several figures behind him; he is accompanied by his children the princes, lords, and Mandarins in this ceremony as well as and the preceding one which involving a sacrifice; the scene includes many onlookers, including officers bearing standards, old men, figures playing musical instruments, and peasants in clothes made of straw holding agricultural implements; to the right a pavilion. 1786 Etching and engraving
