Comments:Facing forward, this Heavenly official holds a scroll with the words ‘The heavenly official bestows happiness’. The figure wears an official’s hat with stiff ties decorated with tassels standing out on either side. Five red bats (wuhongfu) encircle his head, a rebus for ‘five great happinesses’ (wuhongfu): long life, wealth, health, love of virtue and a peaceful death. Prints made at Yangliuqing were noted for their artistry and elegance. With its meticulous drawing and careful colouring, this print is no exception. Here the deep grey on the insides of the long sleeves was painted by hand. This print would have been the main image in the central hall of a house.
