Comments:Liu Pingzhi here documents the struggle of an intellectual to support his family in wartime China. Sitting by a candle over his books, a father holds his feeble son tenderly in his arm in an attempt to feed him. His wife is lying helplessly in bed with an illness. The black and pale yellow colour underscores the despair and hopeless situation. This print is unusual as Liu Pingzhi is best known for his images of the Miao people. He graduated from Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai and was active as a woodcut artist in the 1930s and 40s.
