Comments:Ma Desheng belonged to the first group of avant-garde artists in China who were active after the Cultural Revolution. He was the co-founder of the avant-garde art group ‘the Stars’ (Xingxing) and a co-organiser of their 1979 exhibition outside the National Art Museum of China. This group of 30 prints given by the artist to the museum were created during the first years of political and economic reforms initiated by Deng Xiaoping. During those years, artists could choose their own subject matter and seek individual ways of artistic expression for the first time following the Revolution.
