Comments:From the 1680s foreigners were allowed to trade from the ‘hongs’ or ‘factories’ outside Canton (Guangzhou). They remained the only place where foreigners were allowed to live and trade in China until the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 opened Chinese ports to foreigners; the factories burned down during the Second Opium War in 1856.For another illustration from the same publication, see 1868,1114.457
