Comments:The bowl held by this Buddha identifies him as the Medicine Buddha, or Bhaisajyaguru. The Bhaisajyaguru Sutra records the Buddha’s 12 vows, such as to cure illness and to prolong life. Devotees looked to him for assistance in their lifetime. This scroll measured more than 5 metres. Uniquely, the five rows of images are dated in ink every 21 impressions. The impressions were made on the 8th day (first quarter) and on the 14th, 15th (full moon), 23rd (last quarter), 29th and 30th (new moon) days of each month. These are the six fasting days of the Buddhist calendar, including extra days before the full and new moons. Prints of this kind were made on behalf of an individual, either a monk or a layman.Published: Stein 1921, vol. II, 999; Kikutake 1975, fig. 24; Whitfield 1982-5, vol.
