Comments:Chen Li (b. 1971) is a specialist in the reduction woodblock technique, which involves printing all the colours and lines from a single woodblock, so that the block is ultimately destroyed. Chen Li studied at the Yunnan Academy of Fine Arts and where he received training in oil painting and printmaking but he learnt printmaking primarily from his father. The British Museum has examples of reduction woodblock printing by another Yunnan-based artist He Kun, but the style is quite different. He Kun’s works are more figurative and impressionistic, whereas Chen Li’s works emphasises the use of line, which is very fluid and expressive. Chen Li’s works also move away from his father’s decorative print style that focused on depicting Yunnan’s ethnic minorities. Chen Li’s prints tend to have a personal dimension. It has been suggested that ‘Human Buddha’ is a self-portrait of the artist.
