Comments:Zwalf 1985The caption calls Avalokiteśvara Great Compassionate, Great Merciful Saviour from Hardship, the Bodhisattva who Hears the Cries of the World and promises that the devotee will, with pure heart, recite this every morning 1,000 times. The Bodhisattva holds the flask and willow branch, symbols of healing. The printed floral borders reproduce the way in which votive prints were sometimes mounted. Willow branch is a symbol of healing. Mount Sumeru is the centre of the Buddhist universe. The woodblock has been carved with borders that resemble the mounts for a hanging scroll. The pose, gesture and appearance of the deity is comparable to the silk painting of Avalokitesvara (1919,0101,0.14) in the British Museum collection. Published: Stein 1921, vol. II, 1060; Kikutake 1975, fig. 16; Whitfield 1982-5, vol. II, fig. 150; Wu 2005, 28, pl.5; Xie and Xie 2005, 47
