Comments:Chatting over Tea shows the interior of a typical tea shop in southern China. Two elderly men sit at a table, smoking and chatting over a cup of tea. Customers are being served in the background. The interior of the teashop is suffused with a dim light in which the silhouettes of the two conversing men appear like paper cutouts. Wu Jide shows a masterly control over colour gradations and catches a typical moment of leisure.Having spent his whole life and career in the southern Jiangnan water region, Wu mostly depicts, as he does here, scenes from his home county. He makes woodcuts using water-soluble colour, a technique with a long history in that area.
