Comments:This print is the first in a series of four illustrating daily life in the canal cities of Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. River-dwelling is an ancient subject, but this is a modern scene taking place under a bridge called the Gate of Eternal Blessings. A second scene has been inserted into the design showing women weaving cloth. It is copied from earlier Ming and Qing dynasty prints with the title ‘women’s ten chores’. White patches imitate the effect made when printing with worn-out blocks. They suggest that things are disappearing from the picture as time goes by.Wu Jide grew up in Zhejiang province, and is a professor at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou.
