Comments:In this print, Shao Keping shows the start of a busy day on the Huangpu River. Traditional boats in the foreground are boldly outlined and filled with flashes of bright colour. People live and work on these boats. The small vessels contrast with the modern industrial and transport ships and Shanghai’s majestic skyline, outlined in light tones in the background. Water and sky pull together the elements of the composition.Shao Keping was born in Zhejiang and trained at the White Swan Painting School in Shanghai. Much of his early work was propaganda, created during the Sino-Japanese War and in the new society after 1949. In the early 1960s, art was less explicitly political, but still reflected positive aspects of life under Communism.
