Comments:This print depicts a shipyard with tall cranes and ships of imposing size seen from a low vantage point. In the foreground, dock workers are busily moving heavy goods. Above, the sun rises in the eastern sky. The whole scene is dramatically illuminated in a hazy, morning light. The print was made in 1984, but is reminiscent of the Social Realist style based on Soviet models practised by artists in the 1950s and 60s.Li Hongren graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1953. He visited the UK in 1983 and spent two months at the Manchester Print Workshop in the University of Salford.
