Comments:The warrior in this right-hand print of a pair has a soft face with slanted eyes. He holds aloft a basin in which is a sculpture of Kuixing, a god of literature. Here, Kuixing is an emaciated blue demon holding a book and a rice measure beneath a branch of three citrons (sanyuan). Kuixing is associated with success in the imperial civil service examinations, emphasised by the symbolism of the three citrons. The fruit is a visual pun expressing wishes that the candidate would achieve top ranking (yuan) in all three (san) levels of exams (sanyuan). This would bring fame and wealth to his family. The lower part of the print was cropped, perhaps because it was damaged or to fit it into a Western frame. See also its pair: 1964,0411, 0.14
