Image composed of two woodblocks, from a set of nine images: reduced and amended version of a plate from the series of thirty-six prints by Matteo Ripa, ‘Thirty-six views of the Imperial Summer Palace at Jehol’; view with large hills and a valley, trees, and a rock formation; a pavilion at the top of one hill, and further down, two buildings just visible; in the foreground, two pools of water (?) separated by a thin strip of land with a bridge; rocky landscape in the distance. Comments:The plate it is a version of in the BM Ripa set is 1955,0212,0.1.25. The woodcuts were possibly taken from a book. An almost complete set of the original Ripa prints (1955,0212,0.1 to 34), bound in an volume, is in the Department of Asia, as well as two loose prints (1968,0212,0.27 and 28) from another set, kept in that volume, and completing the series.
