Comments:Plate 15 is often titled in modern literature: [The Emperor] goes to the suburbs to hear [in person] the news of the officers and soldiers who had distinguished themselves in the campaign against the Muslim tribes; [L’Empereur] se rend dans la banlieue pour prendre [personellement] des nouvelles des officiers et des soldats qui se sont distingués dans la campagne contre les tribus musulmanes. None of the plates in the original edition was ever lettered with a title. For a description of the ritual represented in this scene, see Joanna Waley-Cohen, ‘Commemorating War in Eighteenth-Century China’, Modern Asian Studies, Vol. 30, Vol. 4, Special Issue: War in Modern China (Oct. 1996), pp. 869-899.This print is from an incomplete BM set (fifteen only, 1932,0715.46 to 59, including 48*) of the sixteen plates known as ‘Victoires et Conquêtes de l’Empereur de la Chine’ commemorating the Qianlong Emperor’s victories in Central Asia from 1755 to1759. (For a complete set see 1848,0205, 517 to 532).For further information, see the Curator’s Comment for 1932,0715.57.
