Comments:Buddha Amitabha is shown in his Western Paradise, encircled by clouds, and here depicted as Amitāyus, The Buddha of Infinite Life. He is crowned, surrounded by bodhisattvas, monks and disciples, and holds a vase of long life in his hands. The image has a title in seal script reading: ‘Image of the adornments of [the two kinds of] circumstantial and direct [retributions] in the world of ultimate bliss in the West’. The background shows a garden-palace complex. In the foreground, the souls of devotees emerge from lotus flowers to be reborn in Paradise, also called the Pure Land. Similar images can be seen on 8th-century wall paintings in the Buddhist grottoes near Dunhuang.Published: Pierson 2000, 107, fig.I.
