Comments:Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, is the most venerated of all bodhisattvas. There are many reasons for this adulation, among them those stated in the cartouche at the upper left: “Bodhisattva Guanyin who helps the needy and relieves the distressed”. The bodhisattva sits with one knee drawn up and her arm resting on it. The guardian Weituo, his hands held together and his pointed vajra resting on his wrists, stands at her right. In the lower right corner is the child devotee Shancai, who attained perfection under Guanyin’s guidance. On the left are Longnü and her father, the Dragon King. Longnü brought a precious pearl and chose Guanyin as her teacher. These individuals and the parrot in the upper right corner are associated with the Guanyin of the South Sea Pilgrimage centre on Putuo Island off the coast of Zhejiang province. Below the parrot is a vase with a willow branch. Becasue willows have medicinal value, they signify Guanyin’s ability to relieve suffering.Published: Zhang Chun Feng, ed. 1996
