Comments:The hydrangea is called the ‘embroidered ball’ flower by the Chinese, due to its size, shape and colour. In Chinese folk custom, an embroidered ball is thrown by an unmarried woman towards a crowd of male admirers. The man who picks up the ball becomes her future husband. In some Chinese sculptures, an embroidered toy ball is sometimes also seen under the paw of a male guardian lion.
