Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994:This design is copied from a set of allegorical depictions of the seasons, designed by C.P. Cipriani, engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi and published in the 1780s. The present design represents Autumn and an example of the engraving which provided the model, together with a cress basket from the same service are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Phillips, 1956, fig. 55 and pl. 75 top). Matching dishes with the corresponding picture of summer are also known and the armorial service probably included pictures of all four seasons, but examples of spring and winter appear to be lost. The engravings are surrounded by similar borders, but are lacking the crest. The animal, being a rebus of the name Martin, may belong to the English merchant banking family of that name (Howard and Ayers, 1978, vol. I, p. 377; see also BM Franks. 758+). Howard 1974; p. 335. For another plate from the service, illustrated with four “putti”. playing with a garland of flowers.
