Description:
Octagonal plate. Made of moulded porcelain with panelled sides and flat rim with upturned lip lined in brown enamel. Painted in enamels closely after Kakiemon original with scene illustrating ‘Hob-in-the-Well’ story.

It is painted in enamels closely after a Kakiemon original with a scene illustrating the ‘Hob-in-the-Well’ story. For the Japanese original of this very popular pattern, see No. 122. It was copied at Meissen (No. 192) and also by Dutch enamellers (see C. J. A. Jörg, 1984, No. 80). The Chelsea factory’s sale catalogue, first day’s sale, 10th March, 1755, lot 77 refers to ‘… 10 octagonal soup plates, Hob in the Well’. The name is apparently taken from the popular farce ‘Flora or Hob in the Well’ by Colley Cibber, which was adapted in 1711 from the play by Thomas Doggett originally published in 1698.
