Period:Ming dynasty Production date:14thC-17thC
Materials:jade
Technique:drilled
Subjects:dragon plant
Dimensions:Height: 5.50 centimetres Length: 7 centimetres
Description:
Rectangular open work white jade plaque of a stylised dragon cavorting amid lingzhi and foliage surrounded by a border of indented circles. On the plain reverse side at either end are two small perforations drilled from both sides.
IMG
Comments:A row of indented circles bounds this plaque, the inverse of the beaded borders found on many earlier belt ornaments. Within the border is a leaping feline dragon, prancing with outstretched legs, its bifurcated tail entwined with tendrils. A lingzhi fungus emerges within the pattern at the top. There are two double holes on the back for attachment. The fairly flat form of this plaque and its depressed concave discs, rather than convex beads, are stylistic features typical of its relatively late date in the Ming. See Rawson 1995, p.342, cat.no.25.23.
