Comments:Rawson 1995:Copied from an illustration in the ‘Fang shi mopu’, a compilation of designs for ink cakes made by Fang Yulu (fl. 1570-1619) in the late 16th century AD, the physical characteristics of the original object have been subverted, producing an ornament of different weight, colour and texture. Nevertheless, this jade collected associations with the supposed interests of the literate and with their elegant lifestyles. Essential to this elegant living were objects of all materials, lacquers, porcelains and bamboo as well as jades and bronzes, which carried references to the past in general and to famous artists or collectors in particular. Printed illustrations thus established new networks of references between different media and between different periods. See also BM 1885.1227.92 and BM 1937.0416.169.
