Comments:This plaque was probably carved for collectors during the early twentieth century. It has no practical function and were made purely as display items, their back surfaces remaining blank. Its size and weight suggest they were fashioned at a time when ivory was in plentiful supply, while their whimsical subject matter and elaborate carving were such as to delight Western customers.
