Rectangular white jade plaque with strutting dragon in profile on stylised waves with a pierced background enclosed within a plain border.

Comments:16th century. A narrow rectangular frame encloses a pacing dragon, striding over a diminutive island mountain that emerges from the waves. His long undulating body has small scales; from his head streams his mane and from his mouth emerges a long flaming tendril. The background consists of minute openwork fret pattern, which has holes for the attachment of the plaque. The mountain peak and waves are heavily striated. Similar fretwork as a ground is found on belts of the mid to late Ming period. See Rawson 1995, p.342, cat.no.25.25,
