Description:
Small hare plaque of creamy-coloured yellow jade with brown inclusions finished to a soft polish. This flat hare has round raised eyes, incisions denoting a mouth, long laid-back ears, haunches and feet. A small rounded extension represents its tail. There is a small perforation between its jaws and front paws.

Comments:This crouching hare in shown in profile, with a rounded head and eyes in relief. Its long ear lies against its back and has an indentation along the upper edge. Just above the forepaws is a small hole, and a tiny rounded extension represents the creature’s tail. The hare is identical on both sides. Small hare-shaped pendants are one of the principal types of Shang and Western Zhou jade animal. Examples appear at Anyang in Fu Hao’s tomb and at Dasikongcun. Western Zhou examples occur at Shaanxi Baoji Rujiazhuang. The present hare probably belong to this period. See Rawson 1995, pp. 230-231, cat.no.12.38. Shang/Western Zhou. Length 39mm height 22mm.
