Comments:Zwalf 1985As with sandalwood objects, few brittle earthenware shrines of the Tang and pre-Tang period survive. It is therefore notable that several are taken either from the same or similar moulds. These depict the Buddha seated below the double trees associated with his death. In China the ‘Mahāpari-nirvāṇasūtra’ was regarded by Zhiyi (AD 531-97), founder of the Tiantai sect, as belonging to the last, supreme stage of the Buddha’s teaching, and as Tiantai gained in popularity during the 6th century so did scenes and motifs related to the ‘sūtra’. In this case Sakyamuni is shown meditating below the trees, not lying.
