Comments:The circular flattish piece presents an elongated bottlehorn dragon curling back to bite at its own tail. The head is shown with incised eyes, bottlehorns, flared nostrils and open jaws revealing serrated teeth. The outer rim has rounded edges whilst the inner rim on one side has an irregular bevelled edge. A biconical perforation appears a little way behind the head. Shang. Diameter 52mm. See Huang Jun 1987. This dragon, which curls back to bite its own tail, has the appearance of a jade that previously had some other shape and function, possibly a disc of the north-west neolithic culture. It consists of a ring with a depression drilled off centre from the main hole. The outer edge is smooth but slightly irregular in outline. The dragon’s head is indicated on both sides of the ring by a slit, which joins the irregular perforation that suggests the creature’s mouth. It has incised eyes and a modelled bottle horn marked by small ridges. There are further ridges over the brow and at the flared nostrils, and open jaws revealing serrated teeth. A hole is drilled from both sides behind the dragon’s head. The surface of the jade has a soft polish, perhaps due to extensive wear. This pendant is one of four in the collection showing a dragon coiled in a circle. The present dragon w s clearly inspired by the interest in these dragons [from the Hongshan culture] . Because a disc has been recut to make the creature, it is flatter and thinner than many of the other pieces. See Rawson 1995, pp.208-209, cat.no.12.1.
