Comments:A bird standing bolt upright, like an eagle, is mounted above a cylindrical jade tapering to a point. The bird has a rounded head and a large hooked beak. Its broad wings, indicated byridges of relief, are folded against its sides. Similar very fine relief is used for a pattern of hooks across the back, which is almost obliterated by wear. The taloned feet appear to grip something, and there is a long tail. A hole runs from front to back between the legs. The shape of the jade is similar to that of the the short, awl-shaped pendants of the Liangzhu, and indeed it may be based upon precisely such ornaments, as at least one Liangzhu example is known with wing-like extensions. See Rawson 1995, p.202, cat.no.11.2. Shang. Height 80mm thickness 27mm.
