Comments:Rawson 1995:Copied from an illustration in the ‘Fang shi mopu’, a compilation of designs for ink cakes made by Fang Yulu (fl. 1570-1619) in the late 16th century AD, this piece deviates yet further from the originals and illustrates new references. It has inscriptions and seals in relief in forms never seen on ancient pieces. Here the jade carver has added to the associations of the jades by contributing details from the painting tradition.
