Comments:This bird silhouette may be a cormorant with long neck, hooked beak, the large wing delineated with a groove, bifurcated tail feathers and clawed feet. The eye of the bird is represented by a perforation whilst a second conical perforation runs through the breast. Shang/Early Western Zhou. Height 36 mm, length 54mm. See Rawson 1995, p.226, cat.no.12.28, Bluett 1973, and New Zealand 1937. This silhouette of a bird has a small head with a hole in place of an eye. The hooked beak, the long sinuous neck and the large rounded wing suggest a water bird, such as a cormorant. It has a short bifurcated tail, rather like that of a fish, and a large claw. There is a second hole at the breast. Birds of this type have come from Shang sites.
