Comments:Rawson 1995:The ceremonial and display function of jade thumb rings is confirmed by the development of various intricate pendants based upon this shape. Initially such pendants were made by flattening the ring and elaborating the side extensions, but rapidly these extensions were turned into three-dimensional figures or, alternatively, a very fragile, flatter openwork might be employed. In the Han period pendants derived from thumb rings were included in sets (see BM 1945.1017.15), sometimes including pieces of much more ancient lineage.
