Comments:Rawson 1992:Many decorative motifs on early carvings reflect those used on the most highly valued materials: bronze, jade and lacquer. A Shang dynasty ivory handle in the Museum, for example, is decorated with the same ‘taotie’, dragons and squared spirals as bronzes of the same period (twelfth to eleventh century BC).
