Comments:The hairstyles and small feet clearly suggest a Chinese couple. Their expressions are warm and relaxed, giving the impression of conjugal sex. This was most likely made in China and later imported to Japan. A metal clasp has been added to the figures, making it suitable to hang as a netsuke.Netsuke are small carved toggles, generally made of ivory, bone or wood. They were used with traditional Japanese clothing to suspend a small medicine case with compartments (inro-) from the sash. A single silk cord passed through both sides of the medicine case as well as through holes in the netsuke. The toggle sat on the top edge of the sash, holding the medicine case suspended below it. Netsuke were increasingly intricately carved in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Since they were quite discreet accessories the designs were sometimes erotic, as here.
