Description:
Negative (black and white); Monk dancers in a ceremony at Tengoling Monastery near Gyantse on the 10th day of the 5th Tibetan month in 1927. The courtyard is surrounded by onlookers who watch events from every vantage point. A. J. Hopkinson left his given location in the first floor balcony above the main entrance to the courtyard from the temple, seen in the top right of the image, to take this photograph and went right down into the courtyard itself among the dancers. This photograph seems to have been taken at dusk and Hopkinson comments in his diary that he could not photograph the end of the ceremony because of failing light [see Notes]. Tibet.
