Description:
Negative (black and white); The Political Officer Colonel F. M. Bailey hoped to improve the speed of communications between Gangtok and Gyantse by sending a car to be based in Tibet for the use of the Tibetan Trade Agent and others. The car was maintained in Phari, but Hopkinson makes clear in his journals [see Notes] that it was the source of a great deal of frustration. Here the Dodge car can be seen being pushed by Agency staff over the Tang La en route from Phari to Dochen. Hopkinson states that they reached the top of the Tang La with “much effort” [A. J. Hopkinson Archive, OIOC British Library, Mss Eur D998/54, Journal Letters from Gyantse and Various Camps, 1927-28, commencing March 8th 1927, Camp Dochen, pages 2-3]. Tibet. Photographic process
