Period:Qing dynasty Production date:1781-1787 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:glazed, painted, underglazed,
Dimensions:Height: 12.30 centimetres Height: 13.40 centimetres Height: 15.20 centimetres
Description:
Three polychrome painted mugs with an English coat of arms. The mugs are copying a European shape, their handles made of twisted strands of clay with applied leaf terminals. They are made in graded sizes and identically decorated with a coat of arms divided into sixteen squares, between animal supporters, one in the form of a harpy, and with a crowned lion crest. The Latin motto below reads ‘VERO NIL VERIUS’ (nothing is truer than truth). On either side of the arms is a cypher, probably consisting of the initials ‘H’, ‘R’ and ‘V’, within a blue enamelled mantle. The diaper and spearhead rim borders as well as the leaf terminals are painted in underglaze cobalt blue with details in gold.

Comments:Harrison-Hall and Krahl 1994:The arms are those of Beauclerk quartering de Vere, and these mugs are believed to have been made for Aubrey, Baron Vere of Hanford, who inherited this title in 1781 and became the 5th Duke of St. Albans in 1787, when his arms would have changed (Howard, 1974, p. 712). This makes it possible to date these pieces fairly precisely.
