Description:
Porcelain model boat with applied, incised and ‘fahua’ decoration and an ink inscription. This porcelain boat is modelled with a low prow and a high stern which is hollow. On deck are two small canopied pavilions. The smaller one at the rear has one side open, facing inwards, decorative walls and applied flowers to the corners. In front of this is a larger structure with a curved tiled roof, supported by four pillars which together with the edges of the roof have been repaired. Beneath this, facing forwards, is a figure sitting on the deck before a table on which are laid three arrows and an arrow vase. Two figures kneel with their backs to this table. Originally there was a railing around the edge of the boat, parts of which remain applied with lotus flowers. The front section of the boat is hollowed out, possibly to contain water for adding to solid ink for calligraphy. The sides of the boat are incised with lotus designs and the back with a Buddhist canopy. It is all glazed in the turquoise, ink blue and yellow of the fahua palette. On the flat unglazed base is an indistinct ink inscription written in three vertical columns. This includes the boat’s date of manufacture, the date (first year of the Zhengde period, i.e. 1505-6) and a place name, Xintian. It reads 正德 元 年 □ □ □ 大 □ 新 田 □ □ □ □ □ □ □ 永 公 :”zheng de yuan nian □ □ □ da □ xin tian mai □ □ □ □ □ □ □ yong gong”. Even with special photography it has been impossible to uncover further characters.
